Is It or Isn't It? At dinner the other evening we were discussing, as you do, the Berkleyan idea that things only exist when they have an observer. It's a little like the question of whether a falling tree makes a sound when there is no-one in the forest to hear it. Monsignor Ronald Knox put it like this: There once was a man who said "God Must think it exceedingly odd If he finds that this tree Continues to be When there's no-one about in the Quad." The response, from that well-known author Anon, came swiftly: "Dear Sir, Your astonishment's odd; I am always about in the Quad; And that's why the tree Will continue to be. It's observed by, Yours Faithfully, God." Editor |
