WOT2Grow Community Orchard

What an amazing few weeks! The gales and rain have been unrelenting but the orchard has survived remarkably well. We have had only a couple of minor issues and all the trees and plants are still standing and coping with the conditions. The ground is free draining so apart from a soggy patch in the car park which has some standing water in tyre tracks we have been lucky. However it does mean the nutrients are leaching out of the soil and we will be replacing these nutrients shortly to ensure the trees continue to grow well. Hopefully we will not get a deep freeze in the coming weeks which will prevent us from completing the weeding and other maintenance tasks.

We have established the basis of a good orchard so now we are building on this to ensure we will have good crops this coming year. In these dark days it is good to look forward to the spring blossom and all those lovely raspberries and soft fruit later in the summer!

On February 15th from 10:00 to 13:00 John Edgeley will be coming to instruct us again on the pruning of the currants and gooseberries. Non-members are welcome to come along for a very good teaching session but a small charge will be made, it is free for members.

We are still having regular working sessions on a Wednesday at 10:00 and a Sunday at 2:00, weather permitting, so come along and see what we are doing and talk to us about the orchard and how you can get involved.

See us at www.wot2grow.co.uk for details and where you can also send us a message.
