WOT2Grow - Community Orchard

A little bit of summer makes a big difference!  A few days of warm sun after a lot of rain transformed the orchard into a sea of dandelions and boughs of blossom. All the trees have burst forth apart from the very late apples which are showing good signs of life but are waiting to come into flower. This year the cherries have really shown their beautiful blossom including the ones we grafted from our original trees which might not have the best shape but have been covered in flowers. More summer please!

Weeding, feeding and mulching of the trees has been a major task and is well on the way to completion. Feeding the soft fruit has begun and the comfrey tea we make is  providing a rich source of potash for the plants along with the nettle tea which has more nitrogen. Both are made at the orchard by steeping comfrey and nettles in water butts! Simple but effective.

The currants and gooseberries are covered in flowers which are attractive to the bees as is the pear blossom and the dandelions so we are providing good food right on their doorstep.  The wild flowers and sensory garden are also doing their bit and we are slowly building an environment that is beneficial for all.

All of this work is done by volunteers who are making sure the plants are tended, the grass is cut and eventually the fruit is picked. Why not come and join us or at least give an hour of your time to ensure this wonderful amenity is there for all to enjoy.
