Remembering Those who Fell

during the Battle of the Somme WWI

On Saturday July 30th we will be ringing a quarter peal at St Mary’s Tysoe in memory of all those who gave their lives in the Battle of The Somme WW1.

In particular we remember a church bell ringer, Lance Corporal Charles Joseph Reason, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 10th Bn. Charles died on 30th July 1916, aged 23, one month after the commencement of the battle. This notorious action, which resulted in so many deaths, ended on 16th November 1916.

Charles was the son of Charles and Frances Louisa Reason of Tysoe. His name is recorded on the War Memorial of both Tysoe and Allesley and appears in ‘The Great War Memorial Book of Church Bell Ringers in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.

Charles was baptised on 10th September 1893 at St Mary’s, Tysoe.

In the 1911 Census he is aged 17 and described as a coal porter. He had six siblings. It appears that Charles Joseph later moved to Allesley as a gardener to the Venerable Archdeacon Bree of Allesley and worked alongside Charlie and Richard Philpott, who were also from Tysoe.

We felt it fitting that a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles, (1,260 changes), should be rung by a joint band from Allesley and Tysoe. The band will be:

Ian Thompson - Allesley
Mike Chester - Allesley
Amanda Slater - Allesley
David Rake - Tysoe

Catherine Kimmins - Oxhill & Tysoe
David Bell - Tysoe

If anyone knows of any living relatives still in Tysoe we hope you will let us know. Ringing will begin at 3.00 p.m. and last approximately 45 minutes. We hope you will enjoy it and give a thought to all who gave their lives.

‘Lest we forget…’
