WOT2Grow - Community Orchard

The orchard is coming into its own as the warmer weather arrives accompanied by some very heavy rain showers! As the soil is free draining the rain is most welcome but mulching means the nutrients are not washed through too quickly.

The blossom has been really good as the trees mature and grow into good sized specimens. We have a lot of fruit set on the apples, pears and cherries but yet again the damsons, plums and greengages were all affected by the late cold winds and very chilly nights. The apricots, peaches and nectarines suffered most from this very late cold spell and show no signs of fruiting this year.

The currants are laden with fruit and good growth so we are building support systems to keep them off the ground and the gooseberries have a reasonable set too. The summer and autumn raspberries are growing despite the competition from the grass and weeds and hopefully they will be strong enough to give us good crops yet again. Also the logan and tay berries are looking good with lots of flowers.

The bees are doing well have benefited from the local supplies of nectar so hopefully we will have some honey this year.

The volunteers have done a great job of mowing, weeding , feeding and mulching so hopefully the fruit harvest will be good this year just a bit more sun needed!

What a beautiful space and amenity for everyone to enjoy!
